If you want to experiment with a spiky short-haired look, you'll need to style the wig hair using holding gel. Instructions

    • 1

Cut the wig hair down to 1 to 2 inches, if it is not already that short. You may want to cut the sides and back even shorter, depending on the style you are going for.

    • 2

Wet the wig hair so that it is damp, and then put the wig on. This will make it easier to style.

    • 3

Pour a dollop of styling gel into your hand. Choose from soft, medium or hard hold gel depending on the type of hold you want.

    • 4

Rub the gel throughout the wig hair, paying most attention to the hair on the top of your head.

    • 5

Lift small sections of wig hair, pressing the hair strands together between your fingers to create the spiked look. You can create uniform spikes that stick straight up for a bold look,or uneven spikes that go every which way for a more styled, softer look. Blow-dry the hair as you are lifting to help set the spikes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Base the amount of hair gel you will need on how thick the wig hair is. If you want the wig to look as natural as possible, choose a wig with hair texture similar to your own.

  • Take your wig to a hair stylist for a professional cut if you are not confident cutting it yourself.

  • Create a spiky mohawk by slicking the sides of the hair back with a generous helping of hair gel, and then applying an extra thick hair gel or wax to the hair in the center and lifting it up with your hands.

  • Avoid using synthetic wigs, as they are already flammable and become even more so after applying gel.
