Making Your Own Rug Quilting Frame
To quilt properly, you'll need a sturdy frame to work on. Usually these frames are made of wood, and when store-bought, can be expensive. Instead of constructing a complex wooden frame that requires many different tools, simply purchase a few pieces of PVC pipe, fasten them together with glue and add four legs. This project is inexpensive and easy to accomplish in a short amount of time. The frame can be used to create unique quilt patterns that can be used as throw rugs throughout your home.
Things You'll Need
- (10) 3-foot by 1-inch PVC pipes
- PVC glue
- (4) 1-inch 90-degree three-way connector
- (4) 1-inch 90-degree elbow joints
- Set of clamps
Instructions

1
Find a ventilated area to work in, and cover the ground with old towels or an old sheet to protect the frame as well as the surface you're working on.
-
2
Lay four of the PVC pipes down on the work area so they make a square. Position a three-way connector at each corner of the square, making sure to have one of the openings facing up toward the ceiling.

3
Spread a good amount of PVC glue on the last few inches of the outside of the first pipe and then again on the interior of the corresponding elbow joint. Insert the pipe into the connector and hold for 30 seconds.
-
4
Repeat for the remaining three pipes to complete the top part of the frame.
-
5
Create the legs for the frame by laying three more pipes down to create a "U" shape. Grab two of the elbow joints, spread glue on both openings of each joint, and insert the pipes to connect the "U" shape. Using the remaining PVC pipes and elbow joints, repeat this method to create an identical "U" shaped structure for the other leg of the frame.

6
Go back to the top of the frame you created. Spread glue inside of the third opening on each of the four joints. One side at a time, insert the "U" shaped structures into three-way connector openings connecting the top of the frame.
-
7
Flip the entire frame over so it's standing on it's legs. Allow the glue to set overnight before using it. To use the frame, just lay your rug over the top of the frame and attach it to the pipes using clamps.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't have PVC glue, you can substitute liquid cement.
Add rubber stoppers at the end of the legs if you want a sturdier frame that will not slide on wood or tile.
If you're sensitive to chemical odors, wear a protective mask when working with strong adhesives like PVC glue or liquid cement.
