Make a fur rug using faux fur.

A bearskin rug can be a cozy addition to your living room come wintertime. To get the look without using real fur, consider a faux fur rug as an alternative. Faux fur can be purchased from most fabric stores, and comes in a variety of colors. In addition, the fur part covers up stitch lines, making this a perfect project for novice sewers. The finished project can be kept or given to a friend as a charming gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose faux fur in a color reflecting the sort of bear rug you want, like white for a polar bear or brown for a Kodiak bear.

    • 2

Cut the fabric into six 2-by-2-foot squares. Lay them together in a rectangle shape that is 2 squares wide and 3 squares long.

    • 3

Attach the sides of the squares together with straight pins.

    • 4

Cut around the edges of the rectangle of fur, making an oval shape. Don't worry about cutting perfect edges, as wobbly lines look more authentic. Discard excess fur.

    • 5

Sew along the pinned-together edges using a needle and thread. The fur will cover up the stitching, making the rug look like one piece of fur. Remove the straight pins.

    • 6

Cut a piece of rubber batting to the shape of the rug. Sew to the underside of the rug so the piece has some traction when laid on the floor.
