How to Make Flowers out of Double-Sided Scrapbook Paper

Using double-sided scrapbook paper for your paper flowers lets you obtain a more complex look in the final project. A flower made this way can be reminiscent of some real flowers that have darker outer petals and lighter inner petals. Of course, you can opt to do the reverse and put the lighter side of the scrapbook paper on the outside. You can use realistic colors if you wish, or go with funky patterns for truly unique flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your scrapbook paper into circles. You need at least one circle per flower. The larger your circles, the larger the finished flower will be. Start with 3- to 4-inch circles; you can adjust later as you see how the flowers turn out.

    • 2

Fold one of the circles in half. Fold it in half again to make a rounded triangle. Fold the triangle in half one more time. The circle should now be folded into eighths.

    • 3

Trim the folded paper into a petal shape. If you have ever made a paper heart chain, the process is very similar. Do not cut all the way down the folded sides, as this would result in eight separate petals. Instead, simply trim the edges of the top portion of the triangle to round them into the shape of a petal.

    • 4

Unfold the circle. You should now have an eight-lobed piece of paper.

    • 5

Cut down one of the fold marks in the piece of paper until you reach the center. Move over two lobes and cut down that fold mark until you get about halfway to the center. Cut straight across to the first slit you made. This removes two lobes from the flower and leaves a nub of paper sticking across part of the gap.

    • 6

Pull the two petals adjacent to each other together to close the gap you created, with the nub on the outside. This makes your flower slightly cone-shaped rather than just flat, which makes it look more like a flower and also helps you see both sides of the scrapbook paper. Glue the nub of paper to the back of the petal it is now touching. This holds the flower together in this shape.

    • 7

Make another flower in the same method, but approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch smaller if you want a more colorful flower. Use a different kind of paper for this second flower. Glue the second flower to the inside of the first one.

    • 8

Attach a wire stem to the flower if you wish. Alternatively, string several of these flowers on a thread or piece of ribbon to form a simple garland that you can use to decorate your home.
