Iron-on embroidered appliques are created using iron-on adhesive.

Appliques are a quick way to add embellished details to a garment or accessory. Embroidered iron-on appliques are commonly used on uniforms, like those of the military or girls and boys clubs, to represent rankings or merits. In the fashion world, embroidered iron-on appliques have been used to decoratively cover up holes and tears, as well as a way to wear personality and beliefs literally on one's sleeve. DIY versions of these appliques can be made using an embroidery machine and iron-on adhesive.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch your desired design onto the canvas fabric or program the design into the embroidery machine.

    • 2

Center the canvas fabric between the hoop layers. Stretch the canvas fabric taut inside the hoop.

    • 3

Embroider the design onto the hooped canvas. Trim thread ends from the embroidered design using the scissors. Remove the hoop from the embroidered design.

    • 4

Pre-heat the iron to a low setting. Center the iron-on adhesive over the backside of the embroidered design. Iron over the adhesive.

    • 5

Trim the design flush to the embroidered edges. Remove the backing from the iron-on adhesive. The iron-on embroidered applique is now ready for application.
