How to Clean a Sticking Doorbell Chime

Remove the doorbell's cover to clean it effectively.

A sticking doorbell chime is a nuisance, whether it refuses to ring properly or continues to chime long after the button is pressed. This may be caused by a mechanical problem, but could also be the result of accumulated dirt around the plungers or clappers. Try cleaning these parts thoroughly before attempting an expensive, time-consuming doorbell repair or replacement. The built-up dirt can be removed with little fuss, using a few items found in most households.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Cotton swabs
• Rubbing alcohol

Instructions

1. Remove the screws from the doorbell cover. Place them in a safe location and carefully pull the cover off.

2. Dip a cotton swab into rubbing alcohol. Make sure the cotton tip feels very moist.

3. Rub the cotton swab over the clapper and gong, applying just enough pressure to remove dirt without damaging the unit.

4. Replace the cotton swab as it becomes soiled.

5. Use the same method to thoroughly clean the plungers of mechanical doorbells. Also clean the indented area that the plungers travel when in operation.

6. Put the doorbell cover back on after cleaning is complete.
