Smart Valve Ignition Assembly

Gas-powered home boilers and furnaces need an ignition and gas source for warming a household. Many manufacturers offer an ignition device, as well as a gas regulator, but they are often two separate items. However, Honeywell offers a device that provides gas regulation and pilot ignition control in one assembly, called the Smart Valve. Proper assembly and adjustment of the Smart Valve will ensure safe system functioning over time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Coat the input gas pipe with pipe compound. Do not coat the two threads at the pipe's end.

    • 2

Detach any manufacturer seals from the gas inlets on the Smart Valve device.

    • 3

Visually locate the directional gas arrow on the Smart Valve, typically on the device's base. Make sure that the Smart Valve is placed on the gas pipe in the direction of the flowing gas.

    • 4

Attach the Smart Valve assembly to the gas pipe using a wrench. Do not over-tighten.

    • 5

Plug the boiler or furnace appliance electrical wiring harness into the Smart Valve. Make sure that no wires are loose or damaged after installation.

    • 6

Turn the appliance on. Apply a generous amount of water and soap to the gas pipe connection. Observe the soapy solution on the pipe. Any bubbles that occur are from a gas leak.

    • 7

Wipe the soapy solution off the gas pipe if the system does not indicate a leak. Test the appliance's functions afterward.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult the owner's manual to verify the maximum depth that the gas pipe can reach when threaded to the Smart Valve. Gas pipes vary in diameter; the Smart Valve can easily become damaged if the gas pipe is threaded too far into the device. Immediately turn off the gas supply if bubbles appear during the leak test. Consult a gas professional to verify the leak's origin and repair as needed. Gas is highly explosive. Gas can possibly injure any surrounding people if ignited.
