How to Assemble a Superhero Costume

Create this costume on the cheap for your little superhero.

Dressing up as a superhero is a popular and inspirational way to celebrate Halloween. Superman, Mr. Incredible, Spiderman and Batman are all great options for children and adults alike. Some ready-made costumes can cost you upwards of $50 and are still unlikely to last more than one Halloween. Make your own costume with clothing in your closet and a little bit of tape. If you're not comfortable wearing leggings and a spandex swimsuit or underwear, wear tight-fitting sweat pants instead. Choose clothing that's the same color that the superhero wears and use duct tape in the contrasting color. Start by finding a good picture of your favorite superhero.

Things You'll Need

  • Leggings or sweat pants
  • Spandex swimsuit or underwear
  • Tight, long-sleeved shirt
  • Gloves
  • Cotton fabric for the cape
  • 1/2 to 1-inch wide duct or masking tape
  • Hi-top socks

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your shirt on a table or other flat surface.

    • 2

Create the superhero's letter on the front of the shirt by cutting pieces of tape and taping them onto the shirt, overlapping them if necessary to create a curved letter. If the superhero has an emblem, overlap and cut the tape to recreate the shape of the emblem.

    • 3

Put on the leggings or sweatpants.

    • 4

Put on the shirt and tuck it into the pants.

    • 5

Put the socks on and tuck the leggings into them.

    • 6

Put on the spandex swimsuit or underwear.

    • 7

Make your cape. Study the cape on your superhero. Measure your shoulders, and then double that measurement to determine the width of the cape. Determine how far you want the cape to hang down your back. Then allow an extra 1 to 2 feet, as you'll be tying it around your neck. Once you've got your cape sized and then cut, tie it around your neck in a double knot.
