How to Install Backtrack to VMware

VMware is a virtualization software that can run Windows and Unix-based operating systems in a separate window, called a virtual machine; the machine runs within an existing operating system without altering the host machine's hardware or software. You can install BackTrack, an OS based on Ubuntu Linux and designed for the testing of network and system security, inside its own virtual machine in VMware. To install BackTrack to VMware, download a copy of the OS from the official website, then load the file into VMware.

      Download BackTrack from the official BackTrack website. Open VMware, then select "Create a New Virtual Machine."

      Click "Browse," then navigate to the folder where BackTrack 5 download is stored. Click the ISO file, then click "Open." Click "Next."

      Select "Linux" from "Guest Operating System," then choose "Other Linux 2.6x Kernel" from the drop-down menu. Click "Next."

      Assign a name to the virtual machine. Click "Next." Allocate at least 8GB to the virtual machine. Click "Next." Click "Finish" to build the VM.

      Double-click the virtual machine when the build is complete. Select "BackTrack Text - Default Boot Text Mode." Press "Enter."

      Input "startx" to load the graphical user interface. Double-click "Install BackTrack" from the desktop.

      Follow the onscreen prompts to configure BackTrack. Click "Forward" to move through the screens. Click "Finish" to install BackTrack to VMware.

      Click "Restart Now" when the installation completes. Input "root" as the "bt login," then press "Enter." Input "toor" as the password. Press "Enter" to log in to BackTrack.

      Input "startx," then press "Enter." Click "Virtual Machine," then click "Install VMware Tools." Open Terminal.

      Input the following into Terminal, pressing "Enter" after each command:
      mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
      cd /tmp
      tar zxf /mnt/vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz
      umount /mnt

      Input the following into Terminal to install VMware Tools to BackTrack:
      cd vmware-tools-distrib
      ./vmware-install.pl

      Input "fix-splash" into the Terminal when the installation of VMware Tools is complete, then press "Enter."

Tips & Warnings

  • Installation of BackTrack may appear to halt at 99 percent; this is normal. Do not reset or close the virtual machine.
