How to Fix a Top End Washer That Vibrates

Properly installing your top-load washing machine involves balancing the leveling legs so the appliance does not rock forward and backward during a wash. You might notice increased vibration through the floor if the washer is off balance. The vibrations caused by poor installation sometimes cause washing machines to walk across the floor during the high-speed spin portion of the cycle. Fixing your vibrating top-load washer is simple using common household tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Place a spirit level on top of the washer, parallel with the front, and make note of the position of the bubble in the glass vial. The bubble should float in the middle, between the two markings, if the appliance is level side to side. Place the level parallel with one of the sides and make note of the bubble to measure the balance front to back.

    • 2

Move the washer away from the wall a few inches, tip it back so the plastic leveling feet are off the ground, and place a wooden block under the front to keep the legs raised. Turn the legs with an adjustable wrench; the legs extend or retract, depending on the direction you turn.

    • 3

Extend the right front leg if the bubble floated too far to the left when the spirit level was placed parallel with the front; extend the left leg if the bubble floated too far right. Extend or retract both legs the same amount to adjust the balance front to back.

Check your progress periodically by lowering the appliance to the ground and repeating Step 1. Make any further changes based on the position of the bubble based on the advice in Step 3. The bubble floats in the middle of the dial in both positions when the appliance is level.

Load clothes into the washing machine carefully, equally distributing items around the agitator. Mix heavy items such as jeans, blankets and duvets with lighter items such as socks, T-shirts and underwear. A special fluid-filled ring around the top of the drum compensates for minor weight imbalances.
