A veil will top off her make-believe bridal outfit.

Every little girl enjoys playing dress-up, and no accessory allows her to imagine her wedding day more than a wedding veil. However, store-bought wedding veils will probably overwhelm her small frame. Therefore, it is best to custom-make one for her measurements so that she can wear it without worrying about tripping over the fine net. A clear plastic comb will secure her headpiece in place, allowing her to dress it up with a sparkly tiara for a true princess-inspired style. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Tape measure
  • 44-inch-wide tulle

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the child from the crown of her head to the point at which you want the veil to end. This might be at her shoulders, elbows or fingertips. Record this measurement and superimpose it on your length of tulle.

    • 2

Cut the length of tulle to the appropriate measurement, rounding off the bottom corners to give the veil a smooth shape. The veil will take up the full width of the tulle, as this allows the fabric to look fluffy and light.

    • 3

Ease-stitch across the top of the veil. Ease-stitching is accomplished by sewing with the widest stitch and not knotting the beginning or ending stitches. Pull the top threads tight to gather the fabric until its width reaches 3 inches.

    • 4

Pin the gathers in place and sew across the top to secure them.

    • 5

Place the gathered edge of the tulle against the underside of the plastic comb. The comb's teeth should face up and away from the veil.

    • 6

Hand-sew the veil fabric to the comb using nylon thread. To do this, sew through the tulle, over the comb's bridge and through its teeth. Knot the thread and cut away the excess to finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • To wear the veil, hold the tulle in front of you and push the comb into your hair at the crown of your head, keeping the comb parallel to your hair. The crown is about the point at which a headband rests. Flip the tulle back over your head to finish the look.
