How to Add Doors to an IKEA Billy Bookcase

Ikea Billy is a range of bookcase frames, doors and shelves that come in various sizes and colors. All the different parts can be mixed and matched to create a customized book shelving system. Ikea produces several different types of doors for the Billy range. They have different finishes, colors, patterns and materials, but they all attach to the Billy bookcase frame the same way. Ikea has pre-drilled holes in the Billy parts to make the job easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Position the door hinge slots over the pre-drilled holes in the Ikea Billy frame, with the arrow on each door hinge slot facing out. Each hinge slot has four screw holes. Align the two back screw holes with the top two pre-drilled holes in the frame, then drive two screws through the door hinge slot and into the pre-drilled holes.

    • 2

Attach another hinge slot to the bottom two pre-drilled holes the same way. If you have a large door, attach another hinge slot to the bottom two holes in the second column of holes from the top of the frame. Do the same with the other side of the frame.

Attach the door hinges to the doors. These are the hardware parts with the moving hinges. Align the hole in the door hinge with a hole in the side of the door, then drive two screws through the door hinge and into the door. Do the same with the other hinges.

Pick up one Ikea Billy door, then align the door hinges to the slots you attached earlier to the pre-drilled holes in the bookcase. Each door hinge slot has a screw in the middle. Insert the screw through the hole in each hinge, then push the door toward the bookcase frame. Fasten the screws in the hinges slots to stabilize the doors.
