How to Handle Cowlicks in Hair
Cowlicks are patches of hair that grow in different directions from the rest of your hair and resist being combed down. They develop in early stages of development when the brain and skull grow, stretching the hair follicles on your scalp in different directions. Cowlicks exist in most mammals. Although there are drastic ways to handle your cowlick such as surgery and waxing, both men and women can usually handle them in less severe and more natural ways. Does this Spark an idea?

Grow your hair longer. Longer hair not only conceals the cowlick; it also adds weight to your hair in a way that allows you to brush it as you please, notwithstanding the cowlick’s resistance.

Ask a hair stylist about ways to customize your haircut in a way that either minimizes the effect of the cowlick or incorporates its tendencies into your hairstyle. For example, a hair stylist may leave some hair longer just above the cowlick in order to add weight onto it, or it may stand as a quirky curl in your regular style. Another way to incorporate cowlicks is to use them as a starting point for bangs to grow out of.

Blow-dry cowlicks in the direction opposite the way it grows. Use the blow dryer’s high heat setting to blow the cowlick down. Holding the hair taut as you blow dry may also help put it down.

Consider buying hair product to help shape your hair and force the cowlick to comply. Mousses and gels of various hold strength are often sufficient to compromise your cowlick. Ask your stylist about the optimal hair product according to your particular hair characteristics and budget.

Consider cutting your hair so short that the effect of the cowlick is minimal. Although this is perhaps easier for men than women, some women have cowlicks towards the napes of their necks, in which case they can cut that area very short and fade it back into the rest of their hair.
