Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the blocked drain. Wait 15 minutes.

    • 2

Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the drain. Listen until you hear the vinegar and baking soda start hissing and bubbling; this should take only a few seconds.

    • 3

Place a drain stopper over the drain, sealing it off. Allow the baking soda and vinegar to work undisturbed for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Boil 3 cups of water on the stove. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water, then wait for it to come back to a boil.

    • 5

Remove the stopper from the sink. Pour the boiling water into the drain in a slow, steady stream to wash away any lingering bits of the clog as well as the remnants of the baking soda and vinegar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use distilled white vinegar; cider vinegar or red wine vinegar will also work, but they contain additives that won’t help with the cleaning process.

  • To keep your drain running clear, repeat these steps every month to remove buildup in the pipes before it becomes a clog.
