Instructions

    • 1

Sleep with nylons over your dreads to reduce stress on the hair as you sleep. Tossing and turning during the night is one of the main causes of dread frizz, so pantyhose helps keep the frizz at a minimum. You can also tie your dreads with a piece of cloth or coated elastic band to reduce movement during the night.

Avoid scrubbing your dreads dry after washing, which will only promote frizziness. Instead, pat your dreads gently with a towel and let them air dry. Blow dryers and other heated hair tools may cause hair strands to blow out from dreads, so refrain from using them.

Style your dreads only with your fingers to reduce frizziness. Do not brush or comb dreads.

Use essential oils diluted in water in a spray bottle to keep the scalp and dreads moisturized, keep your hair smelling nice and to reduce frizziness. Add 10 to 15 drops of oil, such as lavender essential oil, in a 16-ounce spray bottle to spray dreads. Use your fingers to pat down frizz into the dreads.

Apply a wax or conditioner specifically designed for dreads to reduce frizz that will not unravel and detangle hair. Dread conditioners take less time to apply than dread wax because the conditioner can be sprayed over dreads in a few applications while the wax must be applied individually to each dread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use regular shampoos, conditioners and leave-in conditioners on dreaded hair, because they are ineffective on dreads or will cause them to loosen. Sculpting gels, mousses and holding sprays may be used to reduce frizz, so long as they do not contain conditioning agents, which many brands do.

  • Apply aloe vera to dreads to tighten them; dreads will tighten as the gel dries.
