Tuck your fingers back whenever cutting an onion.

Onions play an important role in the composition of many dishes. For example, onions, along with bell peppers and celery, are part of the holy trinity that serves as the basis for many Cajun and Creole themed dishes. The versatility of onions allows them to be cut and prepared several ways; they can be chopped, dice and sliced. Sliced onions can be made into onion rings or cut into slivers for sautéing. Onion slivers should be cut horizontally -- from stem end to root end -- to keep them from falling apart when cooking. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place an onion on a cutting board. Cut the stem end on the onion off using a knife. Wear a cut-proof glove on your non-cutting hand for added protection. Cut the stems off all remaining onions.

    • 2

Remove the outer layer of onion skin completely. Cut the onion in half so that the cut splits the root end of the onion evenly. Repeat for all remaining onions.

    • 3

Lay the cut side of an onion half on the cutting board. Hold the blade so that it is perpendicular to the onion. Slice downward, making cuts every 1/4 inch from one end to the other.

    • 4

Rotate the onion 90 degrees and cut the root end away, revealing thin slivers of cut onion.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for all remaining onion halves.
