How to Do a Sale for Charity

How to Do a Sale for Charity thumbnail
A rummage sale can be hosted to benefit a local non-profit organization.

Hosting a charity sale can benefit both the non-profit organization and those who donate items. The charity will be able to keep the money earned from the sale, while the donors can benefit with an income tax write-off and a chance to get rid of unwanted items. Charity sales can be conducted similar to a rummage or garage sale, where donated items, such as furniture, clothing, toys, and household items, are sold at discounted prices to shoppers.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect unwanted items and donations that can be sold during the sale from local residents and businesses. Keep items stored together until the day of the sale.

    • 2

Collect new items, gift certificates, or other donations from local businesses that can be either sold or raffled off at the sale.

    • 3

Plan a date and find a location to have the charity sale. Charity sales can be held in parking lots, at warehouses, or in a church or school yard. Weekends, when a majority of people are off of work, tend to be the best time to host a charity sale.

    • 4

Advertise the sale everywhere, including posters, fliers, online networking sites, newsletters and community newspapers. Let everyone you meet know about when the sale is and who it will benefit.

    • 5

Price all of the items in 25-cent increments, which will make sales calculation easier, and eliminate the need to have nickels, pennies or dimes on hand for change. Place smaller items that are not worth 25 cents in a bag with similar items and sell as a grouping.

    • 6

Set up the sale early in the morning, because no matter what time the sale is supposed to start there will be early birds. Place like items together, such as furniture, toys, household items, electronics, and jewelry, and organize those groupings according to price.

    • 7

Break down tables and box up unsold sale items at the end of the day. Unsold items can be saved for the next sale or donated to another charity to use.

    • 8

Send out handwritten thank you notes to everyone who helped with the sale.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the sale is being held indoors, set everything up the night before.

  • Have receipts ready for those who make donations to be used for tax deductions.
