How to Fix Unreadable Segments

Unreadable hard drive segments -- usually caused by viruses -- may cause your computer to crash without warning. It's a serious issue, because you won't be able to use your computer consistently due to its unreliable performance. The good news is that you still may be able to breathe a second life into your computer and have it working just as good as new.

Instructions

  1. Error Checking

    • 1

Click the "Start" button, right-click the hard drive with unreadable segments, then click "Properties."

    • 2

Click the "Tools" tab, then click "Check now" under "Error-checking."

    • 3

Check "Automatically fix file system errors" for a fast scan, or check "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" for a more thorough scan. Alternatively, check both options to repair file and physical errors.

    • 4

Click "Start" to begin the scan and repair process.

    System Restore

    • 5

Click the "Start" button to begin to run System Restore if segments are still unreadable.

    • 6

Type "system restore" in the search box.

    • 7

Click "System Restore" from the search results and follow the instructions in the wizard to select a restore point and complete the restoration process. Select a restore point for a time before issues with unreadable segments started to appear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Switch or upgrade your antivirus software and run daily scans.

  • If you have time, select both the scan and repair options. It's worth it to enhance the reliability of your computer.

  • You may need to have administrative privileges to apply these steps, as you may be prompted to enter your password.

  • You might have to reinstall your OS if you continue to have problems. Be sure to back up your files first; however, some data may still be lost.
