How to Open a .Mod With Premiere Pro

Some camcorders and other recording devices store the video they generate in a format called MOD, which is actually a version of the common MPEG-2 format that uses the AC3 audio encoding format. Adobe's Premiere Pro video editing software does not recognize MOD files and doesn’t natively support the ability to process AC3-encoded files; however, by adding an AC3 library to the Premiere directory and changing the MOD file extension to one that the application recognizes, you can import these files into Premiere with little trouble.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the “ad2ac3dec.dll” library, which gives Premiere Pro the ability to decode data encoded in AC3. This DLL file can be downloaded free from many websites.

    • 2

Place the DLL file in the root directory of your Adobe Premiere Pro installation. The precise name of the directory will vary depending on your version of Premiere, but it will usually be a subdirectory of C:\Program Files\Adobe\.

    • 3

Right-click the MOD file you want to import. Click "Rename" and change the file’s extension to "M2V." If you have many MOD files, it’s not necessary to rename them individually – you can do this quickly from the command line. Click "Start," type "cmd" and press "Enter." Use the "cd" command to change to the directory containing the MOD files – for example, "cd c:\video\mod". Then type "rename *.mod *.m2v" without the quotes and press "Enter." All the MOD files in the directory will quickly acquire new M2V extensions.

Import the M2V files into Premiere as you would any other video file.
