How to Fix Chips in a Porcelain Steel Tub
Certain bathtubs are comprised of steel and feature a porcelain overlay. While the steel makes the tub durable, the surface may become chipped. Heavy objects that fall into the tub or tools used nearby while making repairs in the bathroom may be the likely culprits of chips in the porcelain. Things You'll Need
- Rags
- Rubbing alcohol
- Epoxy or enamel-based paint
- Small paintbrush
- Epoxy resin adhesive
- Masking tape

Small Chips

Clean the chipped area of the tub with a rag moistened with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt, oils and debris. Allow the area dry completely.

Apply a small amount of epoxy or enamel-based paint to a small paintbrush. Brush the paint lightly over the chipped area of the porcelain, starting at the center of the chip and blending it toward the outside edges. Allow the painted area to dry for at least one hour.

Brush on a second coat of the paint in the same fashion. Let it dry and then apply subsequent coats as necessary to achieve the desired appearance. Allow the final coat to dry for several hours before using the tub.
Large Chips

Clean the chipped area of the tub with a rag moistened with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt, oils and debris. Allow the area dry completely.

Coat the chipped area of the tub with epoxy resin adhesive. Coat the backside of the chipped piece of porcelain with the epoxy resin as well. Use a small paintbrush to apply the resin.

Wait about five seconds after applying the resin, then press the chipped piece of porcelain back into its place on the tub. Press firmly for a minute so the two pieces bond together.

Place masking tape over the repair to secure it in place. Let it sit this way for at least an hour.

Take the masking tape off and wait at least 24 hours before using the tub.

Tips & Warnings
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using epoxy resin. Certain products may require only applying the resin to the tub rather than the chipped piece.
