How to Repaint a Rusted Lamp

How to Repaint a Rusted Lamp thumbnail
Rusty lamps come in all shapes and sizes.

One way to protect a metal lamp and give it an entirely new appearance at the same time is to paint it, replacing shiny metal with deeper or flashier colors. The protection that goes with that coat of enamel is not indefinite, and sooner or later corrosion will find its way through the enamel. This is especially the case for outdoor lamps. Once rust has set in, the only way to fix the problem is to strip the lamp and repaint it. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Rotary power hand sander
  • Aluminum oxide or silicon carbide, medium and extra fine grit
  • Rags
  • Drop cloth or newspapers
  • Anti-rust metal enamel paint
  • Brush(es) (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the lamp to remove all rust and paint. Start with a medium to fine grit (80 to 200) to remove the paint and rust, and then sand the lamp again with an extra fine grit (300 to 600) to sand off scratches from the first round of sanding.

    • 2

Wipe down the bare metal with a damp rag to remove any grit that is still clinging to the surface. Allow the lamp to dry.

    • 3

Set out a drop cloth or newspapers and place the lamp on top.

    • 4

Apply a coat of anti-rust metal enamel, such as those made by Rustoleum or RustLock, either with a spray can or a hand brush. If you use a brush, use short, even, up-and-down strokes to create a smooth, even coat. Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use only aluminum oxide or silicon carbide sandpaper for this project. Other types of sandpaper are poorly suited to working with metal.

  • If you chose to use a regular metal enamel in place of an anti-rust enamel, you must apply a rust-inhibiting agent to the lamp before repainting it.
