Use Flash to display syndicated content on your website.

RSS, originally known as RDF Site Summary but now often referred to as Really Simple Syndication, is a way that websites with regularly updated sections can make their content available to other sites and programs, through documents called “feeds.” You can display an RSS feed in numerous ways, one of which is through some simple Flash code. You can then insert this code into your website to display the feed to its visitors.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit flash-rss-widget.com. This is a free site that displays an RSS feed in Flash for you. Click the “Create Your Widget” button to get started.

    • 2

Open up a new tab in your browser and visit the website for which you want to display the RSS feed. Locate the link to the RSS feed -- this is usually prominently displayed using the standard orange RSS icon. Click the link to load up the feed, then copy the URL of the feed from the address bar.

    • 3

Switch back to the flash-rss-widget.com tab. Paste the URL into the “Web Address (URL)” text box and click the “Add Feed” link. The feed appears below, under the “Chosen RSS Feeds” header.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have added all the RSS feeds you want to display. There are also some suggestions of popular news feeds that you might want to add to your Flash widget under the “Choose From Some of the Most Popular News Feeds” header, near the top of the page.

    • 5

Click the “Create My Widget!” button. The widget appears. The latest updates are listed on the left, and clicking these titles places an excerpt from that post on the right side of the widget. Clicking “Read More” takes you to the article itself. Check that the widget displays the feeds correctly and that all are present. If not, click “Start Over” and repeat the process, ensuring that the URLs for the feeds are entered correctly -- the format is usually "http://websitename.com/feed."

    • 6

Copy the code above the widget. Load up the page of your WordPress site that you want the widget to go on. Click the cursor at the point on the page where you want to place the widget, then paste in the code and save the file. Your website is now displaying the RSS feeds in Flash.
