DIY Accordion Case Folder

DIY Accordion Case Folder thumbnail
Accordion folders are good for organizing files into sections.

Accordion folders allow you to pack several items into a compact space. You can separate files into individual sections while keeping them all together in one folder. Accordion folders open wide so the contents are easily found, but the enclosed ends of the case keep papers from falling out. When making your own accordion folder, you are in control of the design. The number of pockets and dimensions of the folder are up to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 12 pieces of paper stock to 8 1/2-by-2-inch wide strips to form the side panels. Fold each piece in half lengthwise, then fold each half in half lengthwise to form a zigzag accordion pattern. Cut one, 3-by-8 1/2-inch-wide strip and fold it into thirds lengthwise to make the bottom edge. The rest of this piece of paper will form the flap. You also need seven full sheets of paper.

    • 2

Lay a full sheet of the heavy paper down. Spread glue along one side of an accordion strip and align it with the short edge of the paper. Glue the strip to the paper with the edge of the strip pointing inward toward the center of the paper. Repeat on the edge side of the sheet. Turn the paper over and repeat the process. Continue layering paper and strips until you have used all the strips.

Lay out two sheets of paper. Spread glue on the outer sides of the folded bottom strip. Align the folds of the strip with the long edges of the paper sheets. Glue the three pieces together to make the outer shell of the folder. Glue the partial paper flap to one side of the shell. Spread glue along the top inside of one side of the case. Align the flap with the edges of the paper and press together.

    • 4

Set the accordion layers inside the folder shell. Spread glue along the edges of the accordion strips on both sides of the folder and align the fold with the side of the shell and press them into the shell to form the folder.

    • 5

Let the folder dry. Stick a piece of hook-and-loop tape to the underside of the flap, and another piece on the folder to create a closure.
