How to Make a Self-Tie Chair Cover

How to Make a Self-Tie Chair Cover thumbnail
A cover can fit chairs with round or square backs.

Wrap ugly metal or plastic folding chairs in the fabric of your choice to create any look from a sweet floral print for a garden setting, to satin for an elegant ballroom. Covers that are custom sized for your chairs will look good and are quick and easy to install. One-size-fits-all chair covers contain excess fabric that must be tucked under the front and back legs of each chair, and when the extra fabric becomes untucked, it can become a tripping hazard.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the end of a tape measure at floor level halfway between the legs at the front of the chair. Take measurements up to the seat, across the seat to the back, and up and over the back to floor level between the back legs. Add 2 inches to this measurement to calculate the length of the fabric.

    • 2

Measure the width of the back of the chair and multiply by 3 to calculate the width of the fabric.

    • 3

Lay the fabric right side up on a large surface with an edge that corresponds to the width furthest away from you. Fold it in half widthwise by bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.

    • 4

Sew the side edges together by stitching 1/2 inch from the edge with a straight stitch. Strengthen these seams by sewing a wide zigzag stitch down the middle of the seam allowances of each seam. The seam allowances are the fabric that sticks out beyond the seams. This makes a large bag like a pillowcase.

    • 5

Fold up 3/5 inch of the edge around the opening of the case and iron the fold. Fold up another 5/8 inch to make a hem and also iron this fold. Stitch a straight seam 1/4 inch below the top fold to hold the hem in place. Turn the case right side out.

    • 6

Place the cover over the chair with the seams on the sides and the front and back edges on the floor. Pull the top corners of the bag behind the chair and tie in a double knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a smooth look, tie the knot at the back of the chair so the loose ends are on the inside.
