How to Make a Doubled Braided Ribbon Lei

Hawaiian leis are a traditional decoration, worn at special occasions, such as anniversaries or graduations, and given as symbols of friendship and love. Ancient Hawaiians used braided leaves, shells or fresh flowers to make leis. Today's versions come in many different types and styles, from fresh or dried flower to those made out of money. You can also make ribbon leis, using double braids to create both color and texture.

Instructions

    • 1

Place both ribbons side by side. Tie them together in a knot about 6 or 7 inches from the bottom. Determine which ribbon will be "Ribbon 1" and "Ribbon 2."

    • 2

Make a semicircle over the knot with Ribbon 2. Make a semicircle over Ribbon 2's loop with Ribbon 1. Pulll the end of Ribbon 1 through the semicircle.

    • 3

Make another semicircle with Ribbon 2 and pull it tightly through the Ribbon 1 semicircle. This makes the first double-braid. Make another semicircle with Ribbon 1 and pull Ribbon 2 through the semicircle.

    • 4

Alternate making semicircles with each ribbon. Pull each ribbon tautly through each semicircle until you reach the end of the ribbon lengths.

    • 5

Tie the ends of both ribbons into a knot to complete the double-braided ribbon lei.
