How to Repaint a Driveway
Driveway paint takes away from a home’s beauty once it begins to flake and peel. Repainting is not difficult to do once the old paint is stripped. Preparing the surface properly helps bind new paint to the driveway, preventing the damage from recurring. Do-it-yourselfers should schedule a weekend to complete the project plus a day for the paint to dry before using it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Pin a plastic tarp over the sides of the driveway with lawn spikes. Some paint strippers contain toxins that are harmful to grass and other growth.
-
2
Brush off loose dirt from the pavement with a stiff push broom. Rinse the surface with a high-pressure hose.

3
Roll paint stripper over the surface with a painter’s rolling brush. Choose a stripper designed to work with the type of paint on your pavement. Wait the recommended amount of time for it to break down and loosen the paint. Scrape the driveway in small sections with a paint scraper to remove the paint. Gather it in small piles and use a shovel to dispose of it in a garbage bag.
-
4
Angle a hose nozzle toward the street and rinse traces of stripper from the surface.
-
5
Coat the driveway with two coats of pure acrylic sealer. Use a spray pump to apply the sealer and allow it to dry. Sealer protects pavement from water damage and fills in small cracks to allow for an even finish.

6
Repaint the surface with a painter’s roller brush or a pump sprayer. If you’re using epoxy paint, use a fine-nap roller for a smooth surface, a 3/8-inch nap roller if the concrete has a grooved surface and 1/2-inch nap roller for a textured surface. For a long driveway, paint the sides with the roller brush and fill in the rest with a spray pump. Apply a second coat once the first is dry and not tacky. Keep cars and foot traffic off the driveway for 24 hours.
