Add style and personality to your hoodie with a custom logo.

Hooded sweatshirts -- or “hoodies” as they are commonly called -- are excellent clothing choices for fall or winter weather. While hooded sweatshirts often bear the logo or name of a school, band or city, there’s nothing stopping you from turning a plain hooded sweatshirt into an expression of your creativity. Achieve this by designing your own logo or finding an embroidered logo that you like and sewing it onto the sweatshirt. This technique is easy to complete and will result in a unique, custom hooded sweatshirt that you can use to keep warm and promote your creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a solid color or patterned but otherwise plain hooded sweatshirt that you want to customize with a logo of your choosing. Wash and dry the sweatshirt.

    • 2

Purchase 1/8 yard of thick cotton fabric. Choose a white or complementary color of fabric to the base color of your sweatshirt. This fabric will form the base of the logo that you will sew onto the hooded sweatshirt.

    • 3

Use a fabric pencil to draw your logo onto the fabric. Cut out the logo with a pair of fabric scissors. Leave a 1/2-inch border along the outside edge of your logo.

    • 4

Fill in the logo with waterproof fabric paint. Let the paint dry completely, at least four hours. When the paint is dry to the touch, spray the fabric with waterproof fabric sealant to further protect the paint from repeated wash and wear.

    • 5

Decide whether you want your logo to rest flat against your hoodie or if you’d prefer it to stick out a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the sweatshirt. Trace the logo outline onto the fabric you used to form its base. Cut out a piece of cotton batting that is 1/2 inch smaller on all sides than your logo shape. Place the batting in between your painted logo (top) and plain fabric (bottom). Pin the pieces together with sewing pins and sew them together with a tight zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. Use sewing pins the patch to the hoodie in the location you want it to be, such as the front middle or centered between the shoulder blades on the back of the sweatshirt. Alternatively, if you do not want the logo raised, pin the painted logo fabric cutout directly to the sweatshirt and skip the other parts of this step.

Use a tight zigzag stitch on a sewing machine to attach the new logo to your hoodie. Remove sewing pins as you go. Trim excess thread and enjoy wearing your new hoodie.
