DIY Peace Wreath

DIY Peace Wreath thumbnail
Peace signs are a twist on regular wreaths.

Wreaths are versatile ornaments that can express the spirit of the season through the materials in them. Traditional wreaths are round and Christmas-themed, but many options exist for a homeowner to make her own wreath that represents herself and her feelings. The peace sign may be a political statement or one that represents a feeling of goodwill toward those looking at it. It is at least partially similar to a classic round wreath.

Instructions

    • 1

Untwist the wire hangers with the pliers and straighten them. Avoid touching the rough ends when doing this to avoid scratches.

    • 2

Form one of the wires into a circular shape with the ends overlapping about 2 inches. Twist the ends around each other so the circle of wire is secure.

    • 3

Lay the circle on a flat surface. Take another straightened wire and fold it in half. Slide the folded wire in a vertical manner around the top of the circular wire so the free ends overlap the bottom of the circle. Ensure the vertical wire is tight and then twist the free ends around the bottom of the circle to secure the wire.

    • 4

Bend the remaining straight wire to form an upside-down V. Twist the center of this wire around the vertical wire about three-quarters of the way down. Attach one free end of the wire to the outside of the circle at the same point as eight o'clock on a clock, and twist that end closed securely.

    • 5

Repeat this step on the other side of the circle, but this time secure it around the four o'clock position.

    • 6

Cut off any protruding ends with the wire cutters.

    • 7

Attach tinsel to the outer circle at the eight o'clock position with some twine. Wrap the tinsel around the wreath continuously until the entire outer circle is covered, and then tie down the loose end with more twine. Cut the tinsel there and start wrapping the vertical wire. Once the vertical wire is wrapped and tied down, cover the two side arms of the peace sign in the same way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of tinsel, suitable coverings for the peace wreath include green branches such as pine or holly. Decorative touches such as colorful berries can also go on the wreath, and a ribbon of a contrasting color to the tinsel can make a candy cane effect, twisted at intervals around the wreath.
