How to Find Legitimate Child Talent Agents
The lure of a career in the entertainment business beckons persons of all ages, including children, who often need the guidance and supervision of their parents to start off in the right direction. A good talent agent is invaluable at helping a child break through those important first doors, to establish contacts and obtain initial assignments. However, not all talent agencies handle children, and not all talent agencies and agents are reputable. Complete a bit of groundwork to lead your aspiring star to a legitimate talent agent, who can honestly help her career.

1
Get a supply of 8-by-10-inch, vertical, full-frame, color headshots. These are a necessity to attract a legitimate talent agent.
-
2
Write a resume for the child, according to information for young performers from the Screen Actors Guild. Include within the information the child's name, eye and hair color, any significant roles she has had in stage, film or television and whether or not she is a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

3
Visit the Screen Actors Guild website, sag.org. On the homepage, position your cursor over "Guild Info" near the top of the page, and click on "Agency Relations" from the drop-down menu.
-
4
Click on "Find an Agent" in the menu on the left side of the Agency Relations page. Under the "Search For an Agent" heading on the next page, choose the location and type of agents, and click the search button.
-
5
Contact the corporate marketing departments of companies that use children in their advertising campaigns, through either phone or email. Obtain the contact information from the company website. Ask which advertising agency the company uses.
-
6
Contact the advertising agency, through phone or email, and ask what talent agents they work with for the child performers in their ads for the company.
-
7
Contact prospective talent agents. Verify that the agency handles child clients in the particular area your child needs -- whether theatrical, voice, stage, commercials, print or a combination.
-
8
Submit the child's headshot and resume to the agents. Only consider signing with agents that do not charge an upfront fee, and ask what other child talent the agent represents. Legitimate agents don't charge upfront fees for expenses for representing your child. They receive their commission when the child is paid for work.
