How to Make a Messy Bun With Long, Thick & Curly Hair
Ever since messy hairstyles became fashionable in the mid-1990s, messy hairdos have remained stylish in one form or another. This has been great news for those with long, thick and curly hair that might otherwise misbehave. With a messy bun it doesn’t matter if your unruly hair refuses to slide sleekly back and stay put. This look is meant to appear as if you casually and quickly pinned your hair back without giving it a first glance or second thought. The messy bun is a great style for formal and informal occasions alike. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Comb through your hair to eliminate any tangles.
-
2
Brush your hair back into a loose ponytail. Don’t pull it tightly, but position it at about the middle of the back of your head.
-
-
3
Secure the ponytail with a hair elastic. Run a comb through any out-of-place bumps to smooth them.
-
4
Grasp the ponytail about three-fourths of the way down and twist it loosely. Coil the twist around the base of the ponytail. Secure the coil in place with bobby pins. Remember: this is a messy bun, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
-
5
Gently tug a few wisps of hair free from the bun. Pull some strands free at the nape of your neck, if you like.
-
6
Apply hairspray to the bun as well as the rest of your hair. A light coating should be sufficient.

Tips & Warnings
Curly hair can tend to get frizzy, making it difficult to style. You can help to control this with an anti-frizz product.
Secure the bun in place after you’ve coiled the ponytail with a second elastic, if you prefer. It will give the bun a slightly different look. You may still need a few bobby pins to help your hair hold the bun shape, depending on the length and thickness.
