How to Make Fluid Width WordPress Themes

Many WordPress themes have a fixed width by default. A fixed width is one set to a specific pixel value. For example, a site with a fixed width of 800 pixels will always be 800 pixels wide, no matter what screen resolution it is being viewed on. If a visitor to your site has a monitor with a screen resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels, your site will still only be 800 pixels wide. The remaining 480 pixels will simply be filled with blank space. A fluid width, on the other hand, is determined by a percentage. So if your fluid width is set to 100 percent, it will always fill 100 percent of the visitors screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Login to your WordPress blog with your administrator name and password.

    • 2

Click on the "Appearance" tab, then click on "Editor."

    • 3

Click on the file in the right column named "Style.css." This is your theme's style sheet. It's the file that controls the appearance of your blog.

    • 4

Locate the column in your theme's style sheet that specifies the width of your theme. The location of this column varies depending on the theme you are using. Some themes might have multiple columns for different parts of your blog. For example, your theme might have a width value specified for the "header," "navigation" and "body/content" sections of your blog.

Change the pixel value specified for the width to a percentage. For example, if your current width is set to "800px", change it to "100%" if you want the theme to fill 100 percent of the visitor's screen. If you want it to fill 75 percent of the visitor's screen, change it "75%," and so on. Once you have changed the width, click on "Update File" at the bottom of the screen to make the changes permanent.
