How to Get Song Samples in Audacity

The Audacity sound editing program can be used to clip segments from existing songs, such as when you want to create a small snippet from a full length song to be used as a song sample. The editing tools in Audacity make it possible for you to specify every aspect of your song sample, including the length of the song and the point in the song from which the sample is clipped. When you are finished selecting the audio for the sample, you can then save it as a new audio file that you can distribute as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch Audacity.

    • 2

Click "File" at the top of the window, and select "Open."

    • 3

Browse to the audio file from which you want to create a song sample, and then double-click the file to open it in Audacity.

    • 4

Click at the point in the song where you want to begin the song sample. Note that there are minute and second markers at the center of the window that can be used to select your song point. For example, the "30" mark indicates the 30-second point of your song, while the "1:30" mark indicates the 1-minute-and-30-second mark.

    • 5

Click at the point in the song where you want to end the song sample.

    • 6

Click "Edit" at the top of the window, and then select "Trim."

    • 7

Click "File" at the top of the window, and then select "Export."

    • 8

Click the drop-down menu to the right of "Save As Type," and then click the file format that you wish to use for your song sample.

    • 9

Type a name for the song sample into the "File Name" field, and then click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can click at any point in the song file and then click the "Play" button to begin playing the song from that point. This feature is helpful for perfecting the start and end points for your song sample.

  • You can use Audacity to edit nearly any type of existing song file, including other song samples. Simply download the song sample, and then open the file in Audacity by clicking "File," and then "Open."
