How to Paint Refrigerator Door Gaskets

Vera Leigh

If you have an old refrigerator that's not ready for the retirement home, consider giving the unit a little style upgrade by painting the door gaskets. Refrigerator door gaskets are an extremely important part of your unit, as they are the sealing strips that keep the cool air circulating around your food. Without gaskets, your refrigerator will lose its cooling capacity and cost you more in electricity. Paint refrigerator door gaskets with an aerosol spray paint made for use on appliances.

Step 1

Cover an outdoor work space, such as a card table set up in your yard, with newspaper and secure it with masking tape.

Step 2

Place new gasket strips in a neutral color, such as white or gray, on top of the newspaper.

Step 3

Put on a face mask that covers your nose and mouth.

Step 4

Shake the appliance spray paint vigorously for about 2 minutes. Take off the cap and spray the length of the gasket strips with paint, positioning the nozzle of the can about 2 inches from the gasket. Do not saturate. One clue is if you see puddles forming on the gasket. The best way to paint gaskets is to spray lightly, allow the first coat to dry, then spray a light second coat.

Step 5

Turn the gasket over and spray the back in the same way. Allow the strips to dry, which should be about an hour; drying times vary according to can instructions. Reinstall the gasket strips around your refrigerator door once they have dried completely.
