How to Create an English .SRT File When I Rip a DVD

The SubRip format, also known as "SRT" after its file extension, is a special file format that contains subtitles for video files and their timing. The subtitles can then be displayed by compatible video player software along with the video but can be switched on and off at will, unlike subtitles embedded directly in the video file. If you want to extract DVD subtitles to an SRT file you need to use a program with optical character recognition to process the ripped DVD since DVD subtitles are stored not in a text format but rather in a modified image format.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the program you are using to rip the DVD extracts the original VOB files.

    • 2

      Download and install SubRip.

    • 3

Launch SubRip and press "Ctrl" and "O" to open the VOB import window.

    • 4

Click the "Open Dir" button, navigate to the location of your ripped DVD files and double-click on any of them to load them into the program.

    • 5

Select the subtitle stream you want to extract using the drop-down menu at the top of the window. Although many DVDs only have English subtitles some may also have subtitles in different languages such as Spanish or French.

    • 6

Click "Start." SubRip will begin scanning the ripped DVD files for subtitle images and prompt you whenever it encounters a character it can't recognize. An additional window called "Subtitles" will open at the bottom of the SubRip window holding the text and timing for completed subtitles.

    • 7

Type the character highlighted in the image and click "Ok" when prompted. This allows SubRip to learn what each character in the subtitles looks like and identify further instances of them without your intervention. If the character in the image is bold, italic or underlined, place a check mark in the matching check box before clicking "Ok."

    • 8

Continue identifying characters until the entire file has been processed.

    • 9

Click the "File" menu at the top of the Subtitles window and select "Save As." Navigate to the location where you want to save the SRT files, type a name for it and click "Save."
