How to Build a Balloon Arch With String

A balloon arch makes a festive decoration for any occasion, from a baby shower to a graduation party, birthday party or a holiday get-together. Although you can purchase balloon arches, they are fairly simple to make yourself and are much less expensive that way. Plus, then you can customize the arch with the exact balloon colors and design that you want. On the day of the party, put together the arch by tying helium-filled balloons to a simple piece of string. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Tie one end of the string to a heavy weight, such as a balloon filled with sand. Leave the other end attached to the spool so you can use as much string as you need.

    • 2

Inflate two balloons with the helium tank, pinching one shut with your hand while you fill the other. Pinch them shut in the same hand and tie the necks off together so you close both balloons and tie them to one another, all in the same knot.

    • 3

Place the pair of balloons against the string about 1 foot from the weight and tie the string around the knot in the balloons.

    • 4

Stand on the spooled end of the string to keep it on the ground.

    • 5

Inflate two more balloons, tie them together, set them against the string, tie the string around the knot and stand on the spooled end of string. You can nest the balloons closely against each other for a dense arch or leave more space between them for a loose arch.

    • 6

Continue the process until the balloon arch is as long as you would like it to be. Make sure the ends are the width you would like them to be and check that the arch is your desired height. Cut the string off the spool and tie it to another heavy weight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Helium-filled balloons start to lose their rise after about 10 hours. Therefore, you should build the arch on the day of the party, no more than 10 hours before the party is scheduled to end.

  • The arch will look best if the balloons are all the same size. One way to achieve this is to cut a circle in a piece of cardboard and inflate all balloons to the size of the circle.
