Skype allows you to make group calls over the Internet for free.

If you are creating a podcast with multiple participants, you don't need to spend a fortune on fancy gadgets to record it. In fact you only need a few free programs including GarageBand which records audio, and Skype which facilitates phone calls over the Internet. You'll also need LineIn and Soundflower which will allow you to direct the sound so that you can record the desired audio input.

Instructions

      Open System Preferences on your Mac and click the Sound icon. Click the Input tab, then select your input which is your external microphone. Click the Output tab. Select "Soundflower (2ch)."

      Open Skype. Click Preferences under the Skype menu. Click the Audio icon. Choose “Soundflower (2ch)” for audio input and audio output.

      Open Garageband and click Preferences under the GarageBand menu. Click Audio/MIDI. Choose your built-in audio for audio output and choose SoundFlower (2ch) for audio input.

      Open LineIn. Select your external microphone in the Input field. Select “Soundflower (2ch)” in the Output field, then click "Pass Through."

      Return to GarageBand and start a new Podcast project under the "File" menu. Choose the appropriate track, usually the "Male Voice" or "Female Voice" track, to record your podcast. Turn on the Monitor in the "Track Info" field. Adjust the volume level as necessary.

      Place the Skype call. Speak into the microphone and ask the others to speak before you begin recording. The audio indicators should move when you and the others speak. If everything is properly configured, press "Record" to begin the podcast.
