How to Fix a Mirror Horizontally on a Wall

The more common way to fix a mirror on a wall is vertically — that way, you get to see more of your reflection. However, in some cases, placing it horizontally is more appropriate for your room décor. For example, if you want to hang it over a mantle or tall centerpiece on a table, you have less room for vertical hanging. Prepare the wall before hanging to ensure your mirror hangs just right in its horizontal orientation.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stud finder to locate the studs (wood beams) inside of the wall in the general area where you want to hang the mirror. If the mirror is really heavy, you must anchor the screws in a wood stud. Use a pencil to gently mark the studs with an “X.” If it’s a lightweight mirror, skip this step.

    • 2

Flip the mirror to the side so it is horizontal and position it against the wall. Try to position it so the mirror edges or middle is right in front of one or more studs. Ask a buddy to hold it up as you examine the position to ensure it is straight and also high enough on the wall to fully show the upper body of someone looking in the mirror if that is your desire.

    • 3

Trace the corner edges of the mirror lightly with a pencil when it is in the correct position so you know where to place your screws or picture hangers. Draw a line at the top, middle area of the mirror so you can place a screw there.

    • 4

Check the back of the mirror to note the position of the hanging holes so you get a better idea of where the screws must go. If necessary, measure the distance from the edge of the mirror to the hanging hole in the back and mark the wall so that you know exactly where to drill the hole.

    • 5

Drill a guide hole inside of each traced corner edge and under the middle line.

    • 6

Place an expansion wall anchor over each screw, then drill each one into the guide holes but remember to leave some of the screw protruding out of the wall (at least 1/2 inch out) for hanging the mirror. If you have a lightweight mirror, skip this and the previous step; instead of screws, use damage-free picture hangers use adhesive and hook-and-loop fastener instead.

    • 7

Gently erase the pencil marks when your screws or picture hangers are in place. Position the mirror horizontally over the screws or pictures hangers and put it in place.
