How to Help a Toddler Hold a Pencil
Most toddlers master gross motor skills, such as walking and jumping, without much difficulty or prompting from you. But fine motor skills, such as how to hold a pencil, may take a little more effort on your part to help him do it right. Teaching your toddler now how to properly hold a pencil and write can help make it easier for him when he gets in school.

1
Set up your writing area. Place large pieces of paper and writing utensils on a table or the floor. Make it fun and relaxed so your toddler enjoys writing.
-
2
Offer a variety of writing utensils. Use thick pencils and crayons, which may be easier for your toddler to hold. Using different colors can also help keep him interested in the task.
-
-
3
Write with your toddler. Your toddler will learn how to hold a pencil by mimicking your actions.
-
4
Turn writing into a game. With your pencil or crayon, make different marks on your paper, such as a line or circle, and encourage your toddler to draw a similar mark. Provide praise and encouragement during the exercise with comments such as, "Great red circle." Describe out loud what your toddler is doing to help him learn.
-
5
Practice writing together. Make writing and pencil-holding a regular part of your day to help your toddler master this skill.
