DIY ATV Plow

DIY ATV Plow thumbnail
A plow can be attached to your ATV to move snow during the winter.

An all-terrain vehicle can be used for recreation and various types of work around the home. During winter, you can use your ATV to plow snow. To do this, you will require a snowplow blade attachment for your ATV. If purchasing a snowplow blade is not an option, you can make one yourself from a sheet of steel. You can do this by first measuring the size needed for the blade of the plow.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the 12-gauge steel sheet to 48 inches by 30 inches with a metal cutting wheel. Place the cut sheet of metal on a 55-gallon drum that has been placed on its side.

    • 2

Apply heat to the center of the steel with a propane torch. Form the piece of steel to the curved shape of the 55-gallon drum by using a hammer. This is the blade of the plow.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of steel to a size of 4 inches by 4 inches. Place one end of the cut pieces of steel up against a side of the blade. Draw the curve of the blade onto the steel with a felt tip marker.

    • 4

Cut the curve of the blade onto one end of each piece with the metal cutting wheel. Weld these pieces to the back of the blade using the welder.

    • 5

Weld the mounting assembly and lifting mechanism for the ATV onto the back of the blade. View the assembly diagram of the mounting assembly for the proper placement.

    • 6

Sand the surface of the snowplow blade with the sandpaper. Wipe away all the sanding residue by using a clean cloth. Apply two to three coats of primer to the blade using a paint brush. Add a final coat of rustproof paint to the blade.
