Doilies are used for making lace collars.

Provide elegance and sophistication to your tops by adding a lace collar. Lace collars can be created from a lace doily, which may be pre-made or made yourself through a process referred to as tatting. Various looks can be created depending on the width and shape of your doily. Collars created with pre-made lace are quick and easy, and an appropriate project for beginner crafters, whereas creating your own lace will require some advanced crafting knowledge and experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you will use a pre-made lace doily, or tat your own. Tatting is a handcrafting technique that uses bobbins to create a series of rings and chains to form a single piece of lace. You will need a doily that is about 10 inches in diameter.

    • 2

Cut a slit in one side of the doily to the center. Cut a hole in the center of the doily that is large enough to fit around the neck seam of your top.

    • 3

Line up the lace doily with the neck line of your top. Make sure the edges are even and pin together.

    • 4

Sew the lace onto the top using a zigzag stitch, removing the pins as you sew. Line a piece of coordinating ribbon along the seam, and hand-sew on.
