How to Do the Zigzag Stitch Applique

How to Do the Zigzag Stitch Applique thumbnail
The zigzag stitch is a common setting on sewing machines.

Applique is a technique of layering fabrics to create different designs. An example is an embroidered flower attached to a shirt pocket. Appliques can be single or multi-layered. Use the zigzag stitch around the outside edges of the applique to finish the design. The zigzag stitch leaves a raised row of thread above the fabric, which makes for an attractive border.

Decide on the width of the stitch for your applique. Use wider stitches for large designs and narrower ones for smaller designs. Adjust your machine to the appropriate width. Thread your size 11 needle with all purpose thread. For heavier fabrics, use size 14 or 16.

Read the instruction manual for your sewing machine to determine if you need to use a presser foot for appliques. Check if you need to adjust the upper thread or bobbin tension for appliques.

    • 3

Test your zigzag stitch by sewing a line on a scrap piece of fabric. Check the underside to make sure the stitches didn't interlock. If they did, tighten your top tension. Practice making any of the abrupt turns and/or curves required by your applique design.

Start your zigzag stitch with the sewing machine needle anchored into the fabric on the outside edge of the applique. Press down gently on your pedal to go slowly with your stitching. Follow the edge of the applique with the needle, going from the outside edge into the applique and back out again. When making a turn, anchor the needle in the outside edge before turning your fabric.
