How to Make Wood Impression Type in Photoshop

How to Make Wood Impression Type in Photoshop thumbnail
Merge your type with a wood background.

When you're creating a design with natural elements, wood impression type will complement your project’s theme. Text digitally indented or carved into wood is eye-catching on-screen and in print. Photoshop includes “Bevel and Emboss” and “Inner Shadow” layer styles that you can use together on the text. With a layer style, you don’t need to render the text, so you can edit the wording after you apply the wood impression effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a digital picture of a wood background by either taking a digital picture with a camera or downloading an image from the Internet.

    • 2

Choose “File." Click “Open,” select your file containing the wood background and click “Open" again.

    • 3

Select the Type tool from the Tools panel.

    • 4

Go to the Options bar and select a font. Because the effect doesn't work well on fonts with thin lettering, pick a font that is thick and bold. Click the color swatch in the Options bar and set the color of the type to black.

    • 5

Click within the document window in the area where you want your text to appear and start typing.

    • 6

Choose the Move tool and click the text to move it into position.

    • 7

Go to the Layers panel and set the blending mode of your text layer to “Soft Light.”

    • 8

Click the layer style button with the “fx” icon at the bottom of the panel and choose “Bevel and Emboss" from the pop-up menu.

    • 9

Click the box next to “Contour,” which is under “Bevel and Emboss” on the left side of the dialog box.

    • 10

Set the “Style” to “Inner Bevel” and the “Technique” to “Chisel Soft.” Then adjust the “Depth” to around “200 percent.”

    • 11

Change the “Direction” to “Down,” set the “Size” to around 20 pixels and “Soften” to 5 pixels.

    • 12

Enter a value of 108 degrees for the “Angle” setting.

    • 13

Decrease the “Highlight Mode” opacity to around 30, and the “Shadow Mode” opacity to about 60.

    • 14

Click on “Inner Shadow” in the column on the left side.

    • 15

Set the “Opacity” to around 60 percent.

    • 16

Modify the “Distance” to 20 pixels, the “Choke” to 10 percent and increase the “Size” to approximately 110 pixels.

    • 17

Click “OK” to create the layer style and apply the “Bevel and Emboss” and “Inner Shadow” effects to the text layer.

Tips & Warnings

  • The settings you choose may vary slightly depending on the size of your image and the look you want to achieve.

  • You can turn the layer style’s effects on or off in the Layers panel.

  • Right–click the layer and select “Copy Layer Style” to copy and paste the wood impression effect to another text layer.
