How to Join Squares & Strips in Crochet
Crochet afghan patterns often require you to work in smaller sections and join the sections together after crocheting. The ubiquitous "granny square" afghan is one example. If the thought of sewing all those squares or strips together is unappealing, you're in luck. A crochet hook is the ideal tool for joining them. A simple slip stitch connects two pieces of crochet without creating the height of a single-crochet stitch. Best of all, a slip-stitch join uses the same yarn you used to crochet the piece, making your stitches almost invisible.

1
Make a slipknot with the yarn you used to crochet or border the squares or strips. Hang the slipknot on a crochet hook of the same size you used to crochet the pieces.
-
2
Hold the two squares or strips you wish to join with their fronts facing. The wrong side of the work should face out on both sides.
-
-
3
Insert the hook into the edge stitches on the right side of the squares or strips. Go through the upper-right edge stitch of the piece closest to you, then through the corresponding stitch on the other piece. The slipknot should be in front of the work.
-
4
Wrap the hook as if to crochet. Pull the wrap through both stitches, then through the slipknot, to join the pieces.
-
5
Insert the hook into the next two stitches to the left of the ones you just joined. Always work through corresponding stitches on both pieces to keep the work even.
-
6
Wrap the hook and pull through both stitches and the stitch currently on your hook.
-
7
Work along the edge in this manner. When you come to the end of the row, the two pieces will be joined. When you fold them flat with the right sides out, you will not see the slip stitches on the back.
-
8
Join every successive square or strip by holding it face-to-face with a previously joined one. The wrong sides of the work should always be facing out as you work the slip stitches.
