How to Troubleshoot a ThinkPad T40

The Lenovo ThinkPad T40 is an older notebook computer that comes with Windows XP. The computer has a built-in troubleshooting and diagnostic tool called PC-Doctor that scans the computer's hardware for problems and reports its findings. The ThinkPad T40 also comes with System Restore, another built-in application that unlike PC-Doctor, works with software rather than hardware. System Restore can return the ThinkPad T40 back to a functioning state from before software errors began to occur. If both PC-Doctor and System Restore fail to help you resolve or identify your ThinkPad's problem, try accessing the computer's system setup program, also known as the BIOS, to reset the PC's settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" and point to "All Programs," then point to "PC-Doctor for Windows." Click "PC-Doctor" to troubleshoot the ThinkPad T40 hardware.

    • 2

Select "System Test" from beneath "Test Scripts." If PC-Doctor detects a problem while performing the test, follow the on-screen directions to resolve the issue, or contact Lenovo for further support.

    • 3

Click "Motherboard Test" if "System Test" passes. If an error occurs, follow the same instructions as above; otherwise, run the "Audio," "Storage," "Video," "Other Devices" and "Communications" test listed beneath "Device Categories," reviewing the results after each test.

    • 4

Exit from PC-Doctor if all tests pass. Click "Start," then click "Run" and input "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" into the dialog box.

    • 5

Press "Enter" to launch System Restore on the Lenovo ThinkPad T40. Select "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time," then click "Next" on the "Welcome to System Restore" screen.

    • 6

Select a date from the calendar on the left, then select the most recent restore point. Click "Next," then click "Finish" to restore the Lenovo ThinkPad T40 to the specified point.

    • 7

Test the notebook after restoring the computer. If System Restore fails to resolve the problem, try another restore point from an earlier date. Restart the computer if the second attempt fails.

    • 8

Press the "Access IBM" button when prompted to go to the BIOS. Click "Access BIOS" or "Start Setup Utility." Click "Yes," then press "F9" to revert system setup to its default configuration. Press "F10" to save and exit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the above steps fail to resolve the issue contact Lenovo for further support. Go to Lenovo Support, at support.lenovo.com, then look up your product model on the "Support Phone List" page to find the technical support number for your product.

  • If an error appears when attempting to start up the Lenovo ThinkPad T40, make sure the floppy drive and disc drive contain no media, then disconnect all peripheral devices -- except for the power cable -- connected to the computer.
