How to Create an Online Work Sample

How to Create an Online Work Sample thumbnail
Display your work online with samples to attract business.

Online work samples aren't limited to words. You can create an online sample for your writing, but you may also choose a portfolio for art, web pages, coding language samples or photography. These samples may support your resume, but should stand alone as a page of links to slides, videos or writing. Your online work page may link to samples in use on the Internet or to works created specifically for demonstrating your ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Define your audience. If you are applying for a position or contract, study the company and develop work applicable to the company. Choose the type of work you want to emphasize. Select a variety of your personal examples to give the potential employer or contractor an idea of your versatility.

Copy the Uniform Resource Locator link for the work you choose that is already on the Internet. Assemble these links in the order you want them to appear on your web page. Transfer photos, slides, videos or writing to your web site or another web site online and copy the links. You can use public websites such as YouTube for videos or SlideShare for slide shows. Numerous writing sites accept poetry or articles for publication and encourage your links. Portfolio sites such as Bliedu.com, FigDig.com or Pixpa.com host your portfolio or pictures of your work.

    • 3

Locate a web site you can use for commercial endeavors if you don’t have your own. Create a web page using a programming language like html, php or drupal, or use the editor or site wizard on the web site. You can also use a commercial program with WYSIWYG. WYSIWYG is a visual editor, or what you see is what you get.

Write two key paragraphs about yourself and your business. Welcome the reader to the page with the first paragraph, using your personal and business names and words describing your specialty. Give details about your business in the second paragraph with more words that explain your business. The search engines use these words to locate your web site.

    • 5

Copy the links to your new page for your work samples. Give each link a title or explanation. Place a link at the bottom of the page for your email or contact information. Link from your resume to the online work sample and from the work sample to your online resume.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use Google Docs, Open Office 3.0 or a similar service for private work samples as well as collaboration.

  • Use only samples for which you own the copyright. If you have works available online that you created and sold, get permission in writing to link to the items.

  • Don't place poetry or stories on the Internet that you may want to use for competition. Competitions often require that entries be previously unpublished.
