How to Fix a Stuck Moen Diverter Valve

The Moen diverter valve diverts water up to the shower head from the tub spout. In today's modern faucets, this valve is part of the spout because it just makes sense to place the stop valve here. If your valve is stuck due to sedimentation or mineral deposits, the best thing to do is replace the valve by replacing the entire tub spout. A replacement project takes about an hour to complete and only requires a few simple tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the water off to the shower by shutting the main water line in the home.

    • 2

Feel underneath the spout for a small hole. This hole seats a set screw. Loosen the set screw with an Allen wrench until the spout easily slides off the tub pipe under the spout. Pull the spout all the way off the pipe.

    • 3

Remove any burrs or sharp edges from the end of the pipe with an emery cloth or metal sandpaper.

    • 4

Turn the new spout upside down, and push it onto the tub pipe until it sits against the shower wall. Rotate the tub spout so the mouth faces down into the tub.

    • 5

Turn the set screw in the tub spout mounting hole clockwise until the spout is tight on the tub pipe and will not move. Push gently on the side of the spout. If the faucet moves at all, tighten the set screw.
