How to Make a Polymer Clay Vase

Polymer clay is a pliable crafting material made of polymer compounds. The clay fires in a regular kitchen oven at temperatures lower than 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Create a polymer clay vase using a plain glass vase as a mold. The glass vase will be safe in the oven since the melting temperature of glass is much higher, as evidenced by the existence of glass bake ware. Make sure the glass doesn't have any paints on its surface as they might not be heat-safe.

• Paintbrush
• Craft glue
• Craft knife
• Fondant smoother
• Cookie sheet
• Oven
• Acrylic paints (optional)
• Acrylic glaze (optional)

Instructions

1. Knead the polymer clay between your hands until it becomes malleable, or for about 5 minutes. Place the mound of clay on a clean table. Use a rolling pin to roll out the clay until it's approximately 1/4-inch thick. Roll out the clay so that it creates a wide circle rather than a long log.

2. Prepare a glass vase for shaping the clay. Use a paint brush to apply a thin, even layer of craft glue across the surface of the vase. Work quickly so the glue doesn't dry before you position the clay.

3. Sit the vase on the center of the clay circle. Fold up the sides of the clay in sections, pressing it into the vase. Press and stretch the clay until it completely covers the vase. Smooth out any lumps using a fondant scraper. Trim off excess clay using a craft knife. Smooth edges with the scraper.

4. Place the clay-covered vase on a cookie sheet. Put the sheet into a cold oven. Heat the oven to the temperature indicated on the package directions of the clay. Watch for the indicator light to signal that the temperature has been reached. Time the clay cooking from that moment, according to package directions.

5. Remove the vase from the oven and let it cool overnight. Decorate with acrylic paints and finish with a glaze, if desired.
