How to Fix a Sofa That's Bottoming Out

If you have the strange feeling that you’re getting lower and lower in your seat every time you sit down at your sofa, there’s a good chance it’s bottoming out. When a sofa bottoms out, the coils, springs and planks in the frame become weak and drop toward the floor. If you let it continue, you’ll be sitting on the floor soon. Some stores sell products to restore couch frames and a professional can help, but if you want a simple, quick and cheap solution to this problem you can use supplies you have at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of your pillows and cushions from the sofa so that you don’t have anything weighing the frame down.

    • 2

Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the frame as well as the length from end to end so that you have an idea of the area underneath the sofa. You may have to flip the sofa and measure from the foot to the frame bottom, or you may be able to slide a measure through bare springs.

    • 3

Hold the sofa at the front and push it up so that you can clearly see the area underneath. Check out the frame and try to push it back up into place.

    • 4

Line up about five or six medium-sized cardboard boxes (about 15 inches long by 10 inches wide by 5 inches tall). If necessary, cut them down so they’re about the height of the space between the floor and the frame.

    • 5

Place old books and hardcover textbooks you don’t need anymore into the cardboard boxes. The thicker and sturdier the books are, the better. Stack them to the top. If you run out, use anything else similar in the house, such as old bricks and wood pieces.

    • 6

Arrange the cardboard boxes in the space under the sofa so they provide support for the frame.

    • 7

Lay the sofa back down gently over the boxes so the frame rests comfortably on top. Put your cushions and back on top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although using boxes of books is a quick solution, it is not necessarily a permanent. The couch might not be the most comfortable of couches with boxes supporting it underneath, but if your cushions are big enough or if the springs are situated certain ways, you might not notice the difference.
