How to Get Lipstick Out of a Purse

Tabitha Harwell

There is only one place your lipsticks should stain - your lips. If this is not the case and you find a nasty mess on the inside of your purse, then fear not, it will come out. Lipstick caps pop off all the time because they are not secure, the temperature is too hot or you bumped it and it loosened the cap.

Keep small items, such as lipstick, in a secure spot inside your purse.

When this happens the lipstick may create a tiny mark on your inner purse lining, or leave you with large melted problem. Lipstick will come off with a little elbow grease and some familiar household products.

  1. Spray hairspray onto the lipstick stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Moisten a clean cloth with warm water and blot at the lipstick stain. Repeat the process until the lipstick begins to fade.

  2. Dab a clean cloth in rubbing alcohol. Blot the cloth onto the lipstick stain, do not rub, until the stain begins to lift. Continue blotting the stain until it is completely gone.

  3. Wait for the rubbing alcohol to dry. Squeeze a small amount of grease-fighting dish soap onto your fingertip. Massage the soap onto the lipstick stain. Leave alone for 10 minutes. Blot the soap, and lipstick, up with a clean cloth.

  4. Dab any remaining spots with a cotton swab soaked in ammonia. Discard the cotton swab once the lipstick transfers. Use new cotton swabs soaked in ammonia until the stain is gone.

  5. Apply a fabric cleanser specifically designed for the fabric of the purse. Most fabric cleansers are mild enough to use on any type of interior lining.

  6. Tip

If the lipstick stains through to the exterior of the bag, follow the manufacturers directions to clean the exterior fabric. Always seal lipstick tubes or store in a small cosmetic bag inside your purse. Read the manufacturer's label to ensure all the products you use will not damage the purse.
