The half-herringbone stitch creates a warm, cozy weave.

Crochet stitches create a light, airy fabric art that is perfect for afghans, sweaters and accessories. The half double crochet stitch offers a slightly tighter weave than a double crochet stitch, which leaves a rather large opening between stitches. Closely related to the half double crochet stitch is the half-herringbone stitch, which also creates a tight weave to create warmth and comfort on winter garments and blankets. To create this stitch, you should already have an established chain or crocheted line to build upon.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the crochet hook has a loop already established around its base from creating a chain or a single crochet line before you begin this stitch. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook, moving from the right and over the hook to the left.

    • 2

Insert the hook into the next open stitch from the front of the crochet piece to the back. Wrap the yarn over the hook, once again wrapping from the right side and pulling the yarn over to the left. Pull the hook back out of the stitch, leaving three loops on the hook.

    • 3

Pull the the crochet hook through the loop closest to the hook itself, leaving you with two loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook again, going from the right over to the left.

    • 4

Pull this final yarn loop through the remaining two loops on the crochet hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice new crochet stitches with an acrylic yarn, which has a smooth texture.
